Wedding Cake FAQs

What options do you offer for weddings?
The simplest and most cost effective option you can choose is to order cupcakes from our regular menu to serve your guests, and then order a 6” cake from our regular menu to use as your “sweetheart” cutting cake. We recommend cupcaketree.com for cute, easy and affordable cupcake displays.

If you prefer a fancier cutting cake with design options, we offer those as well, starting at $60 for 6” cakes and $95 for 9” cakes. See photos on the Weddings Page for design selections (variations, such as incorporating your wedding colors into the design, are possible. Pricing for variations may vary from pricing posted on the design page).

When should I book my wedding order?
Peak wedding season is April through October (our busiest months are May, August, September, and October). If your wedding date falls within the peak season, we suggest you book at least three to six months in advance of your date. You can book your wedding cake up to a year in advance if you have secured your date and your venue.

Can I hold the date?
Yes. You will need to fill out a contract and put down an estimated 50% deposit, based on your guest count.

How much will my order cost?
The price of your order will vary depending on how many cupcakes you need for your guests! Cupcakes can be ordered from our menu page and are priced per cupcake based on flavor. You can order any quantity of any flavor from our menu page. All prices are listed on our Menu page.

Basic wedding design options start at $60 for a simple white fondant or buttercream cake and go up depending on your design preferences.

What if I want a tiered cake? Do you offer tiered cake options?
We do offer an option for those looking for a more traditional tiered cake. We offer a 3-tiered cake that serves 82 guests. Our tiered cake option starts at $10 per serving for basic chocolate or vanilla cake and goes up for other flavors. Designs are priced separately at a rate of $75 per hour (based on complexity of design and materials involved).

If you prefer the tiered cake option and are expecting more than 80 guests at your wedding, you can supplement the tiered cake with a half-sheet cake, a full sheet cake, or cupcakes from our regular menu to accommodate all your guests.

Do you offer delivery and is there a delivery charge?
We use Eco Cabs courier service for all of our regular menu deliveries. Delivery prices start at $24 and go up based on mileage, time of day, and date. We can give you a specific price quote based on your event information when you place your order. Our courier is available for delivery only and does not offer set-up. You will need to arrange cupcake set-up with a member of your party or your caterer.

An in-house delivery specialist is available to deliver all tiered cakes for a fee of $85 for delivery locations within 10 miles of our shop, $105 for locations within 15 miles of our shop, and $125 for locations within 20 miles of our shop. For locations further than 20 miles there is a $3 fee for each additional mile. Delivery for tiered cake orders includes set-up. Some cakes requiring elaborate set-up, (such as placing fresh flowers on the cake, extensive sugar work that must be applied on site, etc.) may be subject to an increased set-up/delivery charge. Please be aware that if the delivery specialist has to wait at the location (for the cake table to be set up, cake decorations to arrive, etc.), additional charges apply ($15 per additional 15-minute increment). A 30% surcharge will be added to all weekday and holiday deliveries.

How far do you deliver?
We offer delivery up to a 30 – 40 mile radius from our shop for tiered cakes. Deliveries for distances outside that radius will be subject to a round-trip delivery fee based on miles traveled.

Can you make the wedding cake and my friend or caterer will make the sheet cakes or groom’s cake?
Sorry, but no. It is against our policy to serve our cakes at an event where other cakes will be served. This is to protect our reputation as having wonderfully moist and delicious cakes made from the finest ingredients that are beautifully decorated. We do not know the quality of the other cakes there and cannot risk being mistaken as the creator of those cakes. It is also a liability issue; we adhere to strict health department requirements in creating your cake. We reserve the right to refuse pick-up of your cake order or return to our bakery with your cake order if we confirm with the event location that cakes other than ours will be served at your event. You will not receive a refund for your cake if you are found to be serving other cakes at your event.

I have a special design in mind and I have a picture of how I want my wedding cake to look. Can you create the design I want?
Special designs are available for our basic wedding cake options. See photos on our Wedding Page for design selections available for the basic wedding 6” and 9” cake options. We can accommodate requests for variations of these designs to match your wedding colors; just ask!

Designs for the tiered cake option can be tailored more specifically to your preferences and are limited only by your imagination! Kamber Sherrod will work with you to create a tiered cake that is unique to you and your wedding day. Kamber also offers hand sculpted and hand painted sugar flowers that can be customized just for you. You may submit photos of cakes that you like, and you are welcome to look through my online cake gallery to choose cake designs that you like (please email weddings@stickyfingersbakery.com for a link to the online cake gallery). Please fill out our cake questionnaire and submit it, along with any photos you have, via email at least 48 hours prior to your tasting.

Are there different prices for any of the cake flavors?
Yes. You will find a full list of all of our pricing and flavors for cupcakes and cakes on our Menu page.

Tiered cakes are priced as follows: basic chocolate and vanilla start at $10 per serving, Fruity flavors (along with basic gluten-free and our red velvet cake) start at $12 per serving and our premium flavors (including all nutty flavors, premium gluten-free flavors and any cakes with ganache filling) start at $14 per serving. If you choose to have different flavors for different tiers, the total per serving charge for the cake will be based on the most expensive tier.

Can I use fresh flowers on my cake? Who puts the flowers on my cake?
If you are using a florist for fresh flowers on your cake, they need to be properly prepped by the florist for placement on the cake. Due to the risk from pesticides, poisonous plants, etc., use fresh flowers at your own risk. Contact your local florist to pick out a non-toxic, food-safe choice.

As an alternative, hand-sculpted, hand-painted sugar flowers can be purchased from our sugar artist. There is a minimum order of $130 for all sugar flowers.

What about my cake topper? Do I bring it to your bakery?
Due to our limited storage space, cake toppers should be brought directly to your venue. Please let us know if your cake topper is heavy and needs support. If you have any doubts about your topper’s suitability, make sure you make an appointment for us to check it out before your reception date.

What if I have more people coming to my wedding than expected and did not order enough cake?
Most people get their final guest count three weeks prior to their wedding date. At this time you should double check the amount of servings your contracted cake order provides. If your guest-count is more than your order serves, then you can order additional cupcakes or cakes from our menu to supplement the order in your cake contract. Please be sure to order the extra menu cake(s) at least three weeks prior to your reception date.

How do I make my payment(s)?
50% of the total is required to secure your date with us and can be in the form of cash, check, or charge. Cancellations must be made more than 30 days in advance in order to receive a refund (less a $50 non-refundable fee). Cancellations made less than 30 days in advance will not receive a refund of the deposit amount. The deposit is not transferable to other orders. Items may not be removed from the order within 30 days of the event date. The balance is due three weeks prior to the event date. Orders placed less than two weeks in advance are subject to a 30% surcharge (15% for cupcakes).

Do you offer consultations and tastings?
You are welcome to come to the store any time to purchase cupcakes for tastings. You can choose any menu flavor, and we will be happy to prepare them in advance with at least 24 hours notice. Samples are priced according to our current menu pricing. Please call our shop to arrange your cupcake samples (202-299-9700).

If you are interested in a custom single tiered cake or the 3-tiered cake option and prefer to discuss your designs with a specialist in person, you may book a consultation and tasting for a $50 fee, paid in full at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. If you book a tiered cake with us, we will apply your tasting fee to your order. For the tastings, we offer up to four samples included with the fee (additional samples are $3 per sample). You are welcome to select your samples from any of the flavors listed on our regular menu.

We want to give every client our full and undivided attention when picking out the perfect cake for this momentous occasion so we cannot guarantee appointments when the client is 20 minutes late or more (these are considered missed appointments and are subject to a rebooking fee of $50). We are happy to provide up to a total of 1.5 hours consultation time (including in-person, phone, and via e-mail); any additional time is $50 per hour, prorated in 15-minute increments.

How can I schedule my consultation?
All of our meetings are by appointment only and are held at our shop located in Washington, D.C. We schedule consultations/tastings Mondays – Thursdays at 5:30 pm, Fridays between 5:30 and 7:30 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays after 3:00 pm. Please allow up to 1 hour for your appointment.

After you’ve checked our flavor and pricing info on our website, read through this FAQ, and you are ready to make an appointment for a consultation and tasting, please email Kamber Sherrod at weddings@stickyfingersbakery.com with the date(s) and time(s) you are available within the days and times appointments are scheduled.  Clients must fill out and submit our cake questionnaire via email at least 48 hours prior to their scheduled appointment, and the $50 tasting fee must be paid at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment.

How can I place my order?
After reading the FAQ and looking over our menu selections, please download and fill out our Wedding Questionnaire. It will give us some basic info about your event and give you the opportunity to tell us what kind of options you are look for.
